A support surface carries the weight of the patient when they are sitting by spreading out the pressure exerted on the skin when a user comes in contact with the surface. Support surfaces come in many different styles, including mattresses, specialist beds, and mattress overlays.
A therapeutic support surface therapy is meant to be used as a specialized device to redistribute pressure on the skin/body. This type of medical device is used for management of tissue loads, particular therapy, and micro-climate functions. Support surfaces are used because there is no technology available to provide complete weightlessness for patients, and anti-gravity technology that is commonly used.
Medicare states that individuals or patients who have pressure ulcers, or are prone to developing them must be given the right type of support surface. If you are in a hospital, facility, or institution, it is required by law that the staff must give you the proper support surface for your condition.
Appropriate treatment for the pressure ulcers must also be performed in order to heal the pressure ulcers and prevent the problem from happening again.
Support surfaces are available in many different forms, they can be used as integrated bed systems, or mattresses. Some patient support surfaces allow the user to place it directly on top of an existing mattress or bed frame.
Active support surfaces can electronically change the load distribution of its surface without the patient being on top of it. These types of alternating support surfaces are the only current technology that allow you to alternate load distribution automatically.
As with all the other support surfaces, active support surfaces rely on the repositioning of the patient and it is as important as with any other pressure reducing surface support.
Pressure can contribute to health issues for some users, support surfacing can help aid in the distribution of pressure
Support surfaces are used to prevent pressure ulcers from forming on the body of an individual.
