If you have limited mobility, bath cushions and bath chairs become very useful devices. They are made from sturdy, durable and long lasting materials. Even so, some maintenance is required. Although they might not fall apart if not maintained, they could begin to grow harmful mold, bacteria and fungus that can cause skin infections.
The tips below will help to keep your bathing aids clean:
When you are done bathing, use a dry cloth or towel to wipe down the cushion or chair. It is important to get into the joints and other crevices. Before putting them into storage, let them fully air dry. If you have an inflatable cushion, keep it inflated until it is fully dry.
Remove your bathing aids from the shower or bathroom entirely as the humid conditions increase the growth of bacteria and mold.
Cleaning the Bath Chair – Bath chair covers can be cleaned in the washing machine. Use an ammonia and water solution to wipe it off first if you see signs of mold or fungus. Clean the metal and plastic parts with soap and water. Avoid harsh chemicals as they can weaken the adhesives used to bond certain metal and plastic parts together.
Once you have rinsed and wiped the parts off, spray them with an antibacterial solution. A soft brush can be used to clean hard to reach spots. Don’t use hard bristles or scrub too hard as it could leave small scratches on the surfaces, which provide a breeding ground for microbes.
Cleaning the Bath Cushion – These can be hand-washed in an ammonia and water solution and/or water and detergent. After cleaning, inflate it and let it air dry. To speed up drying, you can wipe it off with a towel.
Make sure bathing aids are fully dry before using them next time. If it isn’t fully dry, moisture spots could result in the growth of bacteria and mold.
